One of the most persistent and complex challenges that leaders face is motivating people to perform at their highest level, even in difficult or unpredictable circumstances.
Why it Matters?
Recognizing when your staff are overwhelmed is crucial for supporting productivity, morale, and employee and company success. Here are some key signs to look out for:
1. Decline in Work Performance
- Missed deadlines or an increase in errors
- Drop in work quality or lack of attention to detail
- Difficulty focusing or making decisions
2. Increased Absenteeism or Tardiness
- More frequent sick days or time off
- Arriving late or leaving early more often
- Extended breaks or frequent unplanned absences
3. Noticeable Changes in Behavior
- Uncharacteristic irritability, frustration, or mood swings
- Withdrawal from team activities or less engagement in meetings
- Reduced communication or reluctance to collaborate
4. Signs of Burnout or Stress
- Complaints of exhaustion or lack of motivation
- Expressions of feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or helpless
- Increased negativity or cynicism about work
5. Physical Symptoms
- Complaints of headaches, muscle tension, or trouble sleeping
- Decreased energy and overall sluggishness
- Noticeable changes in eating habits (e.g., skipping meals or overeating)
6. Difficulty Adapting to Change
- Struggling to prioritize tasks effectively
- Resistance to new assignments or processes
- Difficulty bouncing back from setbacks
Leadership Strategy
If you notice these signs in your team, it’s important to take action:
- Check in regularly with them—ask how they’re feeling and if they need support. A great question to ask is “how many times last week did you get home for family dinner?
- Encourage breaks—remind employees to take time to recharge. Many of us use the weekend for recharging but weekends are usually busier than the week, especially if you have kids in sports!
- Provide resources—offer stress management support or flexible work arrangements.
- Lead with empathy—acknowledge challenges and show that you care about their well-being. Studies again and again show that this is the number one reason employees stay or go with a company.
Leadership Challenge
Have a One-on-One “check-in” with everyone over the next few days and set up a recurring check-in for the next 12 months.
